Journalist issues net dating tips

Top Tips

The writer of a popular book for women looking to find the man of their dreams has issued a range of tips for anyone considering online dating, GMTV reports today (January 14th).

Freelance journalist and presenter Kate Taylor, who released 'Not Tonight, Mr Right' in 2007, is a strong advocate of its qualities, having met her husband on the net in 2000.

Indeed, recent research from leading consumer magazine Which? revealed that online dating is still growing and is now the third most popular way to meet people.

With that in mind, Ms Taylor has outlined a number of guidelines which she believes will help users make the most of their dating service experience.

Firstly, she suggests that picking a large and reputable site is a good idea, as they have better customer service and "attract far more members that are serious about finding a long-term relationship".

Secondly, she notes that the choice of user name can be particularly important as it can be used to describe some of the member's strong points, features or hobbies.

She told gm.tv: "Sparkly_Eyes1981 is good, as is Bubbly_Brunette. Looking2TrustAgain - not so much.

"You can also use your nickname to describe your interests, like Opera-Lover, or what you do at work, or both - like Hiking_Lawyer or Dancing_Doctor."

Most online dating sites offer members the chance to supplement their profiles with photos and Ms Taylor believes this is another area where individuals can increase their appeal.

She explains that photos are often the main attraction for potential matches, so selecting recent ones which are clear and show the person in a flattering light is a good approach.

Users are also advised to ensure that the pictures only contain themselves, as people looking at their profile "don't want to try to work out which one you are".

"Use the pictures to reinforce your profile text - if you're saying you're a lively, sociable person, choose a picture of you out in a social setting, not curled up on the sofa," Ms Taylor commented.

In terms of the profile itself, daters are warned not to write anything negative about online dating, but instead to offer a few cheerful paragraphs which sum up their personalities.

Finally, Ms Taylor points out the importance of using the tools on offer on the sites, such as looking at profiles of other members they believe could be a suitable match.

She describes the process as being "usually very accurate" and because these members are likely to have the same views on children and so on, this could increase the chances of finding love.

As online dating continues to grow as an industry, taking Ms Taylor's comments on board would appear to be the perfect way to make the most out of the service.
