In New Zealand for example, 86 per cent of men and 77 per cent of women are okay with single people using online dating sites, according to figures from UMR Research, reports stuff.co.nz.

In fact, people in the country frown upon other online activities such as flirting and downloading copyrighted video and music without paying, but believe meeting someone on the web is more morally acceptable.

Those living in the country's capital city Wellington are particularly receptive to online dating as 92 per cent say the concept is fine compared to the national average of 82 per cent.

Indeed web-based matchmaking services are now a common feature across the globe, with the services no longer exclusive to the younger generation but to middle-aged people and pensioners alike.

This trend has led to the introduction of niche websites designed to cater for different tastes, interests, religions, body types, nationalities, values and age groups among other segments.
