Reasons to be Single
You may want to settle down eventually, but before you do, you’re going to go through a period of being single. Whether this ‘singledom’ lasts only a few weeks or many years, here are reasons to celebrate living life on your own.
VarietyImagine being in the world’s best ice cream parlour and only being able to sample one flavour. Well, because you’re not hitched, you don’t have to. Being single is your opportunity to try, test, indulge and reject all sorts of suitors. This freedom to do exactly as you please rarely lasts forever, but make sure you enjoy it while it does.
ExcitementBeing single is about a life in transition. Not for you the deadening knowledge that Christmas this year will be with your partner’s parents. People who are single tend to go out more often and meet more people than those who are already part of a couple. When you’re single, you might not know what tomorrow will bring, let alone next month or next year.
TimeSingle people tend to have a very valuable commodity: free time. Your hours outside work can be filled doing exactly what you want, with whom you want – unlike people with partners and the many time-consuming commitments that steady relationships bring.
FriendsPut your free time to good effect by cultivating new relationships wherever you find them. New friends are stimulating, entertaining and fun, and they can take your life in many new directions. Being single also provides the opportunity to nurture and develop your existing friendships in a way that never happens when you’re part of a couple.
Looking betterIf you’re single, it’s easier to get fitter, be slimmer and look better - and there is more incentive to do so. It’s more common for people in relationships to cook, eat and ‘slob out’ together, none of which does their waistlines, or their looks, any favours. As a ‘singleton’ still interested in attracting a partner, the gym or other sports club not only offers the opportunity to get fit, it’s the perfect pick-up spot, too.
More shoppingBeing single means you’ve got more time and inclination to update your wardrobe and look fantastic.
No compromiseAsk any couple you know what the hardest thing about being hitched is, and they will no doubt say, “having to compromise”. As someone who is single, what to watch on television, where to go on holiday and what colour to paint your bedroom are tastes you can indulge without having to take on board the opinions of your other half.
SpontaneityAppreciate that when you get a last-minute invitation to an exciting social event you can drop everything and go. Want to rush off to Paris for an impromptu weekend with a friend? There is no one to stop you – and no one you have to take along.
A cleaner homeRelish the fact that your home is your own, and that you don’t have to clean up after someone else. If you like the top on the toothpaste tube and your loo seat down, that’s exactly how it will stay.
