World Orphan Week

Top Tips

A child loses a parent every 2.2 seconds, which is why SOS Children, the world’s largest orphan charity, set up World Orphan Week, with the goal to give 1,000 more orphaned children a mother, home and family life this year.

Running from 8-14 February, World Orphan Week is calling on you to do something special and help raise awareness and funds for the charity. Whether you choose to sponsor a child for £20 a month, hold a dinner party, get your school involved or get your company to join in Bowler Hat Day – you can do something to help one of the world’s 145 million orphans.

SOS Children

Edward Edward lives in the SOS Children’s Village in Bindura, Zimbabwe. He and his two young brothers found themselves orphaned after their parents died in 2007, meaning that Edward, aged just 10 at the time, was left to look after his two younger brothers alone.

Struggling to find enough money to feed his family and care for his little brothers at the same time meant that Edward was unable to attend school. Thankfully, all three children were placed in the care of the SOS Children’s Village in Bindura to be welcomed by their new SOS mother, Patricia, at the end of 2008. Under Patricia’s care, they have found a safe and loving family.

“I’m very happy to be in a home with my two brothers and SOS family members – I’m also happy to be back at school after so long,” said Edward.

Supporting World Orphan Week

Monsoon Accessorize is SOS Children’s main partner for World Orphan Week 2010 and has created a children’s t-shirt, which is in stores now. 100% of the profits will go to supporting orphans across the world with SOS Children.

SOS Children currently cares directly for 78,000 orphaned and abandoned children, from AIDS orphans to street children, child soldiers and children orphaned by war, poverty, illness or natural disasters. It runs 500 Children’s Villages in 124 countries around the world, and every penny that’s donated to the charity goes towards SOS Children’s projects worldwide.
