IAM: Always give clear signals when driving

Top Tips

Drivers have been urged to use their indicators properly when behind the wheel.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has compiled a motoring guide advising road users on how to do this.

"Always give clear signals when they are required. Not signalling when you need to – approaching a junction or changing lane – is annoying at best and at worst dangerous," the organisation noted.

Drivers should signal early and not wait until they are making the manoeuvre.

Signalling late when changing lanes on the motorway can be particularly dangerous to motorcyclists, who may be driving down the middle of two lanes to overtake traffic, the IAM said.

Other tips include checking your lights regularly to make sure they are working and watching the movements of other drivers carefully. If they begin to slow down for no apparent reason then the chances are that they are turning or stopping – even if they are not signalling.
