How to Maintain the Exterior of Your Car

For drivers who are extra concerned about the condition of their automobile’s paint, there are padded covers that guard against the sun’s rays, bird droppings and light impacts. These may be appropriate for recreational vehicles.

Eventually, nicks and scratches will lead to rust. To prevent this from happening, these areas should be repainted with touch up paint. However, this paint will not adhere well if there already is corrosion. Therefore, drivers should repaint scratches quickly, before they can begin to rust. Some areas that commonly have minor dings and scratches are around door handles, door edges and mirrors.

Light fixtures should also be quickly repaired or replaced if they are cracked. The shields over low beams, stomp lamps and indicators do more than colour the inside light bulb. They protect the light from rust. When these protective shields are cracked, water can seep in and corrode the light fixture. Eventually, the light will be rusted out and need to be replaced before the automobile can pass an MOT test.

There are two different ways a cracked light can be repaired. Sometimes, tape can be used to cover a crack. A local mechanic can advise drivers about the legality of this in their local area, and a mechanic will know the best type of tape to use. If tape will not suffice, the entire plastic cover can be replaced; this is a simple repair.
