Court of Justice of the European Communities, The

Comment: It is the responsibility of the Court of Justice to ensure that the law is observed in the interpretation and applications of the Treaties establishing the European Communities and of the provisions laid down by the competent Community institutions. The Court of Justice comprises 15 judges and 8 advocates general.

British Council, The

Comment: The UK's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. They are registered in England as a Charity. Visit the site to read how they developed from small beginnings in the 1930s to become the major international organisation that they are today.

European Movement, The

Comment: An International Organisation open to all political and cultural persuasions. Founded following the Congress of the Hague in 1948, the Movement's objective is to contribute to the achievement of a Federal Europe, founded on the principles of peace, democracy, liberty, solidarity and the participation of all citizens.

International Civil Aviation Organisation, The (ICAO)

Comment: One function of ICAO is to facilitate the adoption of international air law instruments and to promote their general acceptance. ICAO works in close co-operation with other members of the United Nations family such as the World Meteorological Organization, the International Telecommunication Union and the World Health Organization.

International Crisis Group, The (ICG)

Comment: An independent, non-profit, multinational organisation, with over 90 staff members on five continents, working through field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict. ICG's approach is grounded in field research. They produce practical recommendations targeted at key international decision-takers.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, The (UNESCO)

Comment: Their main objective is to contribute to peace and security in the world by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science, culture and communication in order to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms which are affirmed for the peoples of the world.

International Court of Justice, The (ICJ)

Comment: This is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Its role is to settle in accordance with international law the legal disputes submitted to it by States, and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized international organs and agencies. European Commission, The

Comment: This organisation embodies and upholds the general interest of the Union and is the driving force in the Union's institutional system. Its main roles are to propose legislation to Parliament and the Council, to administer and implement Community policies, to enforce Community law and to negotiate international agreements.

European Court of Human Rights, The

Comment: The Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms was drawn up within the Council of Europe. International Monetary Fund, The (IMF)

Comment: An international organization of member countries. It was established to promote international monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and orderly exchange arrangements; to foster economic growth and high levels of employment; and to provide temporary financial assistance to countries to help ease balance of payments adjustment.
