'Pregnant man' gives birth to baby girl

A man who was born female but underwent gender reassignment has given birth to a baby girl in the United States.

Thomas Beattie, 34, kept his reproductive organs when he legally switched to becoming a man.

He became pregnant after being inseminated with donor sperm.

Mr Beattie told the US magazine People that he and his wife Nancy welcomed a healthy baby girl into the world on June 29th at an Oregon hospital.

Some initial reports claimed the baby was born via caesarean section but Mr Beattie denied this.

"The only thing different about me is that I can't breastfeed my baby. But a lot of mothers don't," he told People.

Mr Beattie, who sports a beard, announced his pregnancy in April on the Oprah Winfrey show, telling the presenter that he had always wanted to have children.

"I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day," he said at the time.

"I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn't define who I am."

Mr Beattie said he plans to publish a book about his experience.
