Essential Camping Clothing

Top Tips

Irrespective of where you intend to camp, there are a number of vital pieces of equipment you will need to purchase. Camping clothing is one example of these and there are a large range of goods available – but what exactly do you need?

Maybe you've never been camping before at all, or maybe you're just ready to move beyond your usual field of experience and try something more challenging like the mountains of Colorado. Whatever your reason for your trip, you're going to need the necessary clothing to have an enjoyable experience.

Base Layer

The most essential part of your outdoor clothing is the base layer. You may think that you can just go out in a heavy jacket and some thick trousers but this is not the case. The moment you stop running or skiing or climbing, you're going to experience the “after-exercise chill”.

If you have a big winter jacket – particularly if it's made of cotton – it will be so damp with sweat that instead of working to warm you back up, it will continue to cool your body down even after it's stopped sweating. This can be dangerous and could lead individuals to experience further problems.

The base layer of clothing is therefore needed because it will focus on moving sweat away from the skin towards the low-humidity environment created between the underside of the layer and the topside of the layer. Once here it will evaporate swiftly.

Thus the base layer will dry much more quickly than the outer layers, keeping you from hiking around in damp clothing as much as possible.

If you're camping in snow, you'll want to pack two base layers: a lightweight layer accompanied by a thicker version. The ideal fabric for your base layer of clothing is a synthetic or merino wool fabric as it is lightweight and durable.

Camping veterans advise that people should choose a fit that is snug but does not restrict movement too much for colder weather whilst having a looser fitting garment for warmer climates. Thermals can be used for colder weather too and can help to retain heat as much as possible.

Waterproof Outer Layer

One of the main hazards of camping is posed by the elements and rain is perhaps the most common of these. There is nothing worse than being stuck outside in a downpour without adequate clothing and therefore campers should always look at purchasing a suitable waterproof outer layer.

These will vary by their level of water resistance and campers should always select one which is matched to the climate of their destination. People should also invest in an item which has a loose fit but can be tightened or adjusted as necessary. This will allow it to be worn over thick clothing, such as jumpers, will ensuring that it offers the best level of waterproof protection.

Customers should always invest in a product which they trust and should look at well known ranges, such as Regatta clothing.
