Tavern on the Green restaurant overlooking New York's beloved Central Park is one of the Manhattan experiences that both tourists and residents take to heart. The building was originally a sheep pen, but was reincarnated as a restaurant in the 1930's, then transformed into its present fantastic charm about thirty years ago. Set in fairy-like gardens, with Japanese lanterns and jillions of twinkle lights icing the trees, Tavern on the Green has six dining rooms, most overlooking gardens, furnished with crystal chandeliers, hand-carved mirrors, stained glass and artworks. From May to September you may enjoy a drink in the garden bar with live music and dancing, and al fresco dining. This is a great choice for celebrations. The eclectic contemporary American menu changes seasonally and features dishes like starter of lobster bisque with tarragon crème fraiche, main course of roast prime rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, and dessert of chocolate pecan tart. Tavern on the Green is a New York institution. Long may it wave.
