Au Petit Monsieur restaurant in Paris' 11th arrondissement between Bastille and Republique is a cosy, authentic French eaterie with a claim to history. Just in case you ever wondered what happened to the Bastille once it was stormed, we can tell you that we found some of the stones and pillars right here. With a quiet, rural ambience the dining room has plain wooden tables laid with tea cloths for table linens -- appetisers may start with a tureen of soup served help-yourself style. The traditional French menu changes with the seasons and includes dishes like veal with morels and girolles cooked in walnut oil, or fillet of perch in gruyere crust with lie de vin sauce. The three small dining rooms promote the intimate ambience and the staff look after you very well indeed.
