Guide to Singles Holidays

The independent traveller is not a lone fish in any regard. From an 18-30s hedonistic retreat to the Mediterranean to a more subdued ramble through parts exotic, the singleton, the backpacker, the gap year explorer, the independent adventurer is always on the move and in like company wherever they land.

If you are thinking about traveling alone the following are a few money saving and security tips to keep in mind during booking and while you are on the road.

Booking

Sometimes there are discounts and special offers available for single travelers so do your research to find the best deal for you. Look on the internet or ask your travel agent. There are lots of travel guides that are helpful to single travelers, such as the Rough Guide series available at major book stores and the Lonely Planet guides and website.

Be clever with your timing and get a great deal when it comes to booking your holiday, so avoid peak times such as bank and school holidays. Book before or after these times to get discounts, saving you money on travel and accommodation.

By vacationing off-peak you get to experience the places you wish to visit without being overrun by tourists.

If you have never traveled alone before make sure that you let the hotel know this as they can make special arrangements for you so that you feel comfortable during your stay. Some hotels are very woman traveler friendly, with suites that come with hairdryers, hair tongs, etc to suit a female on her own.

Also, to save a bit of money on dining costs try the self-catering option and shop for your food in the local shops.

Safety and security

As a solo traveller, you especially need to be wise and keep your wits about you. The following are especially good points if you are a woman.

  • Don’t leave your passport, camera, money or any highly treasured or valuable items with a stranger. Even if you bonded over a hookah in Marrakech.
  • Be sober. Going on a bender in the sun with friends is fun. Waking up penniless and in a foreign jail is not. The hangover will just be a reminder of your folly.
  • Don’t stand out too much from the crowd. Blend in with the locals as much as possible. Avoid eye contact.
  • Keep sensible hours. Try to do most of your sightseeing during the day. Walk yourself senseless so you have no energy or desire to venture out late at night.
  • Make friends with other single travellers. If you are a woman alone the company of other solo female travellers will help keep you safe and allow you to venture into areas you may not feel comfortable visiting alone.
  • Don’t have a visible money pouch or camera around your neck. If you must bring along a big back pack, try to store it in a safe place whilst sightseeing.
  • Do your research on your destination(s). Get as much information about the places you are visiting, so you know where to avoid.
  • Get your insurance policy sorted out before you go on holiday. If you are skiing off-piste or going on an adventure holiday you may need extra coverage.
