The whole country has a population of just over four million, meaning that there is plenty of natural beauty to explore. A progressive attitude towards the environment and conservation means that much of it has been protected and trips into the lush jungles can reveal a host of plant, animal and bird life, such as crocodiles, monkeys, butterflies and lizards.
Guided treks into the dense forests are available and can be arranged either before or during your stay, while the many national parks are home to a wealth of natural wonders. If there is time, try and visit the La Paz waterfall gardens and the Poas Volcano, filled by a steaming lake.
Some of the best national parks include the Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas de Guanacaste, with its leatherback turtles, Parque Nacional Chirripo, with spectacular views across rugged mountains, and Parque Nacional Santa Rosa.
The bustling capital San Jose is the biggest city in Costa Rica by far and has a variety of things to see and do, including excellent museums, nightclubs, theatres, restaurants and bars.
Costa Rica's long coastline means that there are dozens of charming beach resorts to suit all tastes, with many offering watersports facilities for keen divers or surfers. The country is renowned as one of the world's best diving spots, with tropical sharks and colourful fish easily spotted in the crystal clear waters.
Founded by Quakers last century, the Monteverde settlement and cloud forest reserve is one of Costa Rica's most popular attractions and features art galleries, a butterfly garden and a serpentarium.
The best time to visit Costa Rica is during the dry season between December and April. The period leading up to Christmas and New Year is particularly lively, with a number of colourful festivals taking place in San Jose.
