New Zealand 'Most Popular Long-Haul Destination'

New Zealand has been voted the best long-haul travel destination by the British public, it has been announced.

15,000 people voted in the poll organised by the Guardian newspaper as part of their Travel Awards, with New Zealand coming out on top, beating Australia, Japan and the Maldives in the top ten.

Reacting to the news, the head of New Zealand's tourist board George Hickton called it "recognition we couldn't buy", adding the extra tourist trade likely to be generated could be worth millions to the country's economy.

The award from the UK follows a similar poll recently conducted by US television channel NBC, which found New Zealand to be the most popular destination for honeymooners travelling from the States.

Locations including France, Barbados and Peru were also listed as other favourites among newlyweds.
