Resort Holidays: A Survival Trick

Hot, bothered, sandy and irritable. Everyone sinks to the depths of irritation at some stage while taking a resort holiday, but there is a way out.

There are many reasons for deciding to take a package holiday. Often the easiest sort of trips to organise at the last minute, as someone does all the coordination for you, there is also the temptation of usually reliable sunshine and the knowledge that some relaxation is on offer.

Others go in order to keep the costs of their holiday down, as it is easier to tell with a package deal exactly how much you will end up spending. Still others simply enjoy the opportunity to lie around and do nothing for a while.

If you go on a resort holiday, you often then faced with a significant dilemma during your stay: other people.

This is an inevitable problem, as accommodation tends to be closely packed and akin to sardine packaging. Of course, the intention is that you will spend most of your time outside, but what if you have concerns that the 06:00 trip to put your towel on a sun lounger, followed by a day listening to dear little Johnny being screamed at by his mother is not quite what you feel like today?

It can happen to even the most seasoned of package holiday-goers, whatever your destination – something just suddenly snaps and the peace and relaxation you had longed for seems in danger of being sucked into the whirlpool of irritation.

Do not fear, it is such a common problem that there will almost always be a solution.

Firstly, check the trips on offer. You will have been given the hard sell on some of these, no doubt, by your holiday rep on arrival. However, there are usually independent bureau in resort centres that offer more interesting trips, with a wider variety of people that you are unlikely to have already bumped into. As an added bonus, prices are likely to be lower.

A really important consideration is to keep your mind open to the sort of trip you might like to go on and keep an element of the daredevil about you.

The best trip I have ever been on from a resort was a boat trip in Corfu. We were approached while sitting on the beach by a strange man with a huge beard and no top on. He asked us if we would like to go on his boat trip for what seemed an unbelievably cheap price.

Taking our lives in our hands, we agreed to go on the trip and spent a beautiful day in the company of Nick the Greek, his English wife and some young and interesting fellow travellers. We sailed the clear blue seas that the Captain had known and loved all his life, had a fresh lunch that he prepared for us himself and we all got a turn at the tiller.

Apart from the price being better than a rep-pushed deal, we were able to see the island through the eyes of someone who really loved it.

So whenever you're stuck in a resort with sand in your suncream and moaning holidaymakers in your ears, take a break; be brave and branch out.
