Scottish Airports See Record Passenger Numbers

Scotland's airports saw a record number of passengers jetting off to worldwide destinations in September.

More than two million holidaymakers and business travellers flew out of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports, a rise of five per cent on previous months.

Glasgow is now the country's busiest airport with almost nine million passengers taking to the skies each year but Aberdeen is the fastest growing with an eight per cent rise in travellers over the last year.

Orlando and Dubai proved to be the most popular destinations for passengers taking off from Glasgow whilst Aberdeen saw many passengers popping across to Bergen in Norway and Esbjerg in Denmark.

Those flying from Edinburgh largely favoured Nice in France and Copenhagen in Denmark.

Donal Dowds, managing director of BAA Scotland, said all three airports would benefit from plans for £500 million investment over the next ten years to enable them to meet the growing demand.

"At all three airports, the picture is extremely positive, with international traffic growing substantially. Our aim is to build world-class airports serving a wider range of worldwide destinations," he told the BBC.
