New York is a great city to walk in and the traditionally balmy spring weather provides the ideal conditions to explore the city on foot, one neighbourhood at a time. Make time in particular for the eclectic streets, shops and cafes of Greenwich Village and Soho

Manhattan Island has more to see per square kilometre than perhaps any other city in the world and some of the best museums and galleries available. If there is time, be sure to pay a visit to the vast Metropolitan Museum, with treasures from every era and across the globe, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Jewish Museum and the fascinating American Museum of Natural History.

A trip up the Empire State Building is a must during spring, for the most breathtaking views across New York and its towering landmarks. Try and identify some of the most famous buildings in the city from the viewing platform and gaze across the harbour to the Statue of Liberty.

Central Park is one of the most iconic places in the city and provides a lush haven away from the bustling streets and traffic of the rest of the city, with colourful flowers, forests, pools and tree-lined paths. Musicians, tourists, performers and joggers all crowd into the park on warm days, providing tourists with plenty to see.

During the mild spring months, take advantage of the outdoor experiences that New York has to offer, such as a trip on the famous Staten Island Ferry and a visit to the Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island and its Immigration Museum provide a great insight into the constant stream of people arriving in the United States chasing the American dream.

One of the world's most famous shopping destinations, New York offers stores of all sizes, selling everything you could ever want, from the vast department stores and glamorous shops of Fifth Avenue to tiny independent retailers in Soho.

Other top spring highlights in and around New York include the quirky beachside boardwalk on the Atlantic at Coney Island, strolling across Brooklyn Bridge's boardwalk, for spectacular views across the East River and the Harbour, and wandering around Bronx Zoo.

There are plenty of places to stay in New York to suit all tastes and pockets. If Manhattan Island seems too expensive, try some of the suburban neighbourhoods such as Brooklyn and check out the local shops, bars and delis for an authentic New York experience.

At night, head for the neon chaos of Times Square, take in the glamour of a Broadway show, see a concert, enjoy the world-class restaurants, or go drinking in one of the excellent bars and nightclubs.

Spring in New York is a heady exciting time of year, as the streets and the parks burst into life. May and June are the most popular months for tourists, but March and April can be equally beautiful.
