Ryanair was the first low-cost airline to offer flights from the UK to Salzburg and it still operates regular services from Stansted Airport.
Meanwhile, British Airways, easyJet and Thomson Airlines all fly to the Austrian city from Gatwick Airport in the south of London and Flybe jets out of Stansted.
Thomson also offers direct flights to Salzburg from several other cities, while the online low-cost airline Jet2.com operates services out of Leed-Bradford Airport in the north of England.
Where is Salzburg in Austria?
The capital of the federal state of the same name, the historic city of Salzburg is located just north of the Austrian Alps, in the west of the country.
The Salzach River runs through the heart of the city, which is closer to the German city of Munich and the Slovenian capital Ljubljana than it is to Austria's own capital, Vienna.
Any stop-overs?
With flights from the UK to Salzburg taking around just two hours, no stop-overs are either offered or needed.
However, due to the high concentration of airports servicing low-cost airlines in the region, many passengers opt to fly into Salzburg and then fly out of another destination when returning to the UK.
Things to see and do in Salzburg
Salzburg has long been a top tourist destination thanks to its rich history and its vibrant cultural scene.
The Unesco-listed Old Town boasts a number of historic gems and 'must-sees' on a visit, including Salzburg Cathedral, the dominating Hohensalzburg Castle and the birthplace of Mozart, whose music can be heard all across the city.
Just outside of the Old Town, the Palace of Mirabell boasts some of Europe's finest gardens, while the nearby Untersberg Alpine peak and Berghof, which served as Hitler's retreat during the war, are also popular day-trip destinations, with most hotels offering package tours.
Aside from the ubiquitous Mozart concerts taking place in dozens of historic churches each evening, Salzburg's rich nightlife includes an acclaimed restaurant scene, as well as some bustling Old Town bars and beer houses.
