Vancouver holiday

Vancouver lies nestled between the sea and the mountains in the extreme south-west of British Columbia.

Its hilly terrains and numerous bridges offering views of the ocean, sheltered bays and the city itself make it one of the most scenic attractions in Canada.

A plethora of beautiful green spaces, sandy beaches in plentiful supply, value hotels and a moderate climate all make the city a tourist destination which can incorporate everyone's needs.

Traditions and culture in Vancouver

First inhabited by the Salish Indians, there was no real settlement on modern Vancouver until 1865, when the Hastings Timber Mill was built.

Two years later, English sailor 'Gassy' Jack Deighton set up a bar, from which Gastown emerged - the centre around which Vancouver as it is today grew.

The city is well-renowned as a port, with its fishing and wood processing trades with Asia being particularly prominent.

Current cultural events of note include the Pacific National Exhibition, the second largest fair in Canada which incorporates a bit of everything - sports, competitions, music, amusement park rides and international exhibits.

September's two-week Vancouver Fringe Festival, which presents drama, musical theatre, comedy and dance from around the world, is also a major attraction with the locals.

Things to do in Vancouver

It is fair to say that visitors looking to book flights to Vancouver will not find themselves at a loss for things to see or do.

The active traveller is certainly catered for, with skiing, hiking, cycling and rockclimbing opportunities all readily available.

And the more scenically-orientated visitor should certainly head to the 400-hectare Stanley Park, which is one of the best green spaces in the country.

With Vancouver Island a short trip away with its varied wildlife and impressive scenery, the diversity provided by booking flights to Vancouver is clear.

Gastown also demonstrates a lively, holiday-style atmosphere at all times and is ideal for a night out, while Chinatown certainly carries a genuine feel.

The shaky Capilano Suspension Bridge is also a must for any thrill-seekers, while the largely unspoilt Wreck Beach is worth a visit for its ambience, with beers always in good supply despite the relaxed atmosphere.

Weather in Vancouver

Vancouver has a moderate oceanic climate which is tempered by the warm Japan Current, making it the warmest major city in Canada.

Although it doesn't get too hot in July and August (22C on average), the weather is largely warm and pleasant through the summer months, making it a great destination for last minute holidays.

The only downside is that the winter days can get very dark, very early, while the city experiences a lot of rain, which can sometimes feel like it is going on for weeks.
