Flitwick holiday

Flitwick overview
A small town in the sleepy county of Bedfordshire, Flitwick has a lot of offer for travellers wishing to discover the secrets of rural England. The magically-named town has appeared on television and captured the imagination of J K Rowling who named ‘Harry Potter’ character Professor Flitwick after it.
Flitwick is also steeped in Anglo Saxon history. Old maps show that it has been around since the turn of the previous century and Flitwick is even mentioned in the ‘Doomsday Book’.
What is more, in recent years the town has established its very own Country Park and Flitwick Moor was long ago designated a Site of Specific Scientific Interest. These areas offer ramblers a number of exciting walking opportunities in one of England’s unsung sites of beauty.
However, before one considers visiting Flitwick there is one vital piece of information they must grasp – it is idiosyncratically pronounced Flit-tick rather than Flit-wick, adding all the more character to this sleepy settlement.
Flitwick Location
For a small town, Flitwick is surprisingly well connected. It has a direct train link to London. This service operates from Bedford and terminated in Brighton, running through St Pancras, London Bridge and Blackfriars on the way. It operates every 20 minutes and an adult return to the capital costs around £20, including Tube access.
From Bedford, London and Luton travellers can connect to a wide variety of destinations throughout the UK.
Motorists travelling to Flitwick would be best advised to use the M1, as Flitwick is located nearly 12 miles equidistantly from both junctions 12 and 13.
International visitors and those taking domestic flights can also reach Flitwick from Luton Airport. There is a direct train link between Flitwick and this airport, which takes around 15 minutes.
Why Visit Flitwick?
Flitwick is etched with Anglo-Saxon reminders, has a genuinely haunted house and is overflowing with beautiful wood and moorlands perfect for rambling through.
It has a vibrant pub culture for the evenings and the neighbouring market town of Ampthill has a great range of Italian, French and Indian restaurants.
Shopaholics may also note that Flitwick is a 25 minute drive from the retail mecca that is Milton Keynes shopping centre. Milton Keynes also boasts an Xscape centre, with tobogganing and skiing facilities.
