The Isle of Arran is 19 miles long and ten miles wide, making it a relatively small island. However, what it lacks in size it makes up for in diversity and attractions.

Sprinkled with quintessentially Scottish villages, the Isle of Arran is a remote rural landscape that is the perfect retreat from the city for holidaymakers wanting to steal a slice of serenity.

As the most southerly of the Scottish islands, the Isle of Arran will not take those living in England and Wales too long to reach. It lies between Ayrshire and Kintyre in the Firth of Clyde and is well-served by public transport.

During a stay on the island, visitors can enjoy days at the coast, hikes through the mountainous interior or pleasant strolls through the rolling green hills and surrounding woodlands.

While the island may not have all the mod cons of other Scottish destinations, such as Edinburgh, those who are seeking just a wee bit of excitement can take part in a number of water sports that are organised on the coastline.

Isle of Arran Location

The easiest way to visit the Isle of Arran is by ferry. There are two main services operating from the mainline. The first sets sail from Ardrossan to Brodick and costs £5 for a single fare. There is a direct train service between the port and Glasgow and the boat waits for the train to arrive before setting sail, as this is how most passengers arrive.

Alternatively, there is a second service leaving from the mainland destination of Claonaig and arriving at Lochran in Arran. This crossing takes 30 minutes and the boat serving the root has the capacity for 150 passengers and 18 cars. It is cheaper to use this crossing but the service can be cancelled in the winter months due to bad weather.

In high season, it is advisable to book in advance for both of these ferry options.

Why Visit Isle of Arran ?

One of the biggest attractions of Arran is its beaches. Whiting Bay is a popular rambling destination for many visitors, while a trek up Goatfell is the perfect way to discover the interior. There are many small towns to enjoy an afternoon pub lunch in before setting off once again.

Furthermore, the island has a wide variety of golf courses and clubs for fans of the sport to take advantage of.
