Luton holiday

Luton is the town which famously made its name through the hat manufacturing industry, earning its residents’ the nickname as Mad Hatters. However, the past manufacturing glory has dried up in Luton, with hats being produced in the cheap sweatshops of the Far East and even car giant Vauxhall slashing jobs there in recent times.

The south-east town, which borders London, is now more famous for its airport, London Luton Airport, and has earned itself a grim and grimy image in the public, regular entering the top ten of the Worse Place in Britain to Live list.

However, Luton does have something to offer tourists who are keen to see beneath its grimy veneer. Located a short distance from the city centre are the stately homes of Hatfield House and Knebworth, where Robbie Williams played his legendary gig.

Furthermore, the town is a cheap base for those wanting to explore London on a shoe-string budget and is near the Dunstable Downs.

Luton Location

Motors can reach Luton by taking the A6 in from the north, the M1 from the north west and the A505 from the north east. From the south, the A505, the A1081 and the M1 all give motorists a straight link into the city.

Luton is also served by Luton London Airport for those wishing to travel to the region by plane. The airport has over 30 national and international connections throughout Europe and beyond.

The town has its own railway station, which has a direct link to London St Pancras, which takes 40 minutes. Along the way it stops at St Albans and a travels all the way through to Brighton.

A number of rural bus routes also run between Luton, Bedford, Dunstable, and Flitwick.

Why Visit Luton?

Luton has a number of attractions for visitors to frequent, including the Luton Museum & Art Gallery and Stockwood Park Museum. It is also located within ten miles of Whipsnade Zoo, an affiliate of London Zoo with a wide range of animal attractions.

The town is also near some stunning countryside, such as the Dunstable Downs, which are a popular place for walking and flying kites on the edge of the Chiltern Hills.
