One of England’s true landmarks, Windsor Castle is a sprawling residence of the royal family and one of the oldest castles in the world.

A royal residence since the times of William the Conqueror, the building is absolutely steeped in history. Queen Elizabeth II is widely thought to consider the castle her primary home, having hinted at a slight dislike for Buckingham Palace in the past.

Despite this, the Queen has opened the doors of her home – during certain times and hours. Windsor Castle has since become one of England’s most popular tourist attractions, having a wide appeal with people of ages and interests.

A short distance from the big smoke of London, the castle makes for a lovely day out in the countryside and, if visitors are lucky, they may even catch a quick glimpse of the Queen herself.

Windsor Castle Location

Windsor Castle is within walking distance of two railway stations.

Those travelling from London Waterloo will take the train to Windsor and Eton Riverside, which takes an hour. Those travelling from London Paddington or Reading can take the train to Slough and then change for a connecting service to Windsor and Eton Central.

Those travelling by car should take the M4 motorway, which runs between London and Bristol. Motorists should get off at Junction Six. Park and Ride facilities are available.

Windsor is also well-served by London’s three airports Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, which operate an extensive range of international and domestic flights.

There are also a number of bus services running from London to Windsor, which take around 40 minutes.

Windsor Castle is more than just a day out; it is an attraction which gives visitors an insight into the heritage of the British nation and its monarchy.

Visitors can enjoy a tour of the castle, witness the daily changing of the guard and walk around the opulent public rooms, which are overflowing with paintings, decorated ceilings and antique furniture.

Furthermore, the surrounding Windsor Great Park is a beautifully landscaped piece of land, which on a sunny day is the perfect place for a picnic.

For those planning a longer trip, the famous Eton College is located a few miles way, as is family attraction Legoland.
