The first US aircraft carrying aid relief for the victims of Cyclone Nargis is flying to Burma today.
Water, mosquito nets and blankets are the main cargo components for the C-130 aircraft, which took off from Utapao airfield in Thailand earlier today.
The death toll from Nargis continues to approach the 30,000 mark but some fear the end total could reach 100,000. Aid agencies and governments have expressed their frustration with poor cooperation from the military junta which rules the south-east Asian country.
White House spokesperson Gordon Johndroe said "one flight is much better than no flights" on Friday as he responded to the suggestion that the C-130's contribution will only make a small difference.
"We're pleased that they're allowing a US flight to come in. We're pleased that they allow any aid to come in, and we'll keep on working that," he added.
Other aid agencies are expected to begin flying in their shipments later this afternoon.
