Flights to St Lucia: Flights from the UK to the Caribbean

Top Tips

Flights to St Lucia from which airports in the UK?

The lush and sun-soaked island of St Lucia is often referred to as 'the Helen of the West Indies', in reference to the mythical beauty of Helen of Troy.

It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the Caribbean nation has emerged over the years as a favourite holiday destination among sun-seeking Britons, including those that flock there to get married on one of its idyllic beaches.

At present, direct international flights to the island's main airport, Hewannora International, are available from both London Gatwick and Manchester, giving travellers a degree of flexibility when it comes to booking their trip.

Airlines flying from the UK to St Lucia

The majority of flights arriving into St Lucia originate in either the United States or the rest of the Caribbean.

And while the relatively small British presence used to be down to solely British Airways, the carrier has recently been joined by Virgin Atlantic, with this competition helping to keep airline ticket prices down, particularly for those travellers able to go online and take advantage of e-ticket offers.

While BA currently offers direct flights to St Lucia from London Gatwick, rival Virgin flies to the island from both Gatwick and Manchester Airport.

Where is St Lucia in the Caribbean?

One of the Windward Islands, which includes the likes of Martinique, Barbados and Grenada, St Lucia is located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, right on the border of the Atlantic Ocean.

With a population of just 160,000 and with most of these living in the capital city of Castries, St Lucia is often cited as one of the unspoiled gems of the Caribbean.

Any stop-overs?

Despite a lengthy journey time, flights from the UK to St Lucia are all direct.

However, it is possible to use the country as a base from which to island-hop around the Caribbeam, whether by boat or plane.

Indeed, British Airways currently operates regular services between Hewanorra International and Port of Spain, the capital of nearby Trinidad and Tobago.

Things to see and do in St Lucia

Aside from the stunning beaches and luxury resorts and hotels dotted around the island, St Lucia offers a number of fascinating excursions for visitors.

Inland, natural highlights include the world's only drive-in volcano, the lush Botanical Gardens and a number of rainforests, including the Pigeon Island National Park, located on the site of the former British military base of Fort Rodney.

However, those looking for nothing more than relaxation usually wind up at one or all of Soufriere, Gros Islet or Marigot Bay, which offer world-class dining, pristine beaches and chic bars in the evening.

Also, the city of Castries makes for a fascinating day out, thanks to a colourful colonial history mixed with contemporary cosmopolitanism.
